Why You’ll Love These Homemade Twix Bars
To be honest, when it comes to creating a three layer snack or dessert I’d often quickly click over to another recipe. But these homemade twix bars can be created in a flash!
They’re a healthier option than some caramel chocolate slices and the best part is that they’re a breeze to make and will keep in the fridge for days!
Well that’s if they last that long! Lovely as a daytime morning tea snack or a sweet treat after dinner. Trust me you’re going to love these.
Ingredients
Almond flour – or almond meal is used as the base of these Twix bars. Adds a lovely nutty texture and flavour and a great source of fibre too.
Maple syrup– natural sweetener providing the sweet factor without the processed sugars and additives.
Coconut oil – super versatile and binds well in the base and adds a creamy texture to the middle layer as well. When mixed in the the chocolate will help to cut the top layer a little easier without cracking.
Vanilla extract – adds a hint of vanilla to the base and middle layers.
Peanut Butter – adds creaminess to the middle layer and packs some protein punch as well.
Chocolate – The top layer is made up from delicious chocolate, perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Use dairy free chocolate if you would like to make this recipe vegan.
Salt – only a pinch with turn this caramel delight into something a little bit different. This is totally optional and you can omit it from the recipe if you like.
Ingredient Notes
Peanut Butter – Feel free to swap out the peanut butter for your fave nut, almond or cashew butter. Use smooth or crunchy to make this slice into peanut butter crunch Twix Bars and uniquely your own .
How To Make Twix Bars Step by Step
Get your oven ready to rock and roll at 180 degrees Celsius (fan forced)! Grab a 20cm x 20cm (8 inch) square baking pan and line it with some baking paper or parchment paper – don’t forget this step!
Step 1. The Base
Mix together almond flour, maple syrup, and coconut oil until a dough forms. Press that dough down firmly into a pan, creating a perfect, even layer. Bake it for just 15 minutes until it turns a beautiful golden color. But wait! Let it cool for a moment before adding the next layer.
Step 2. Peanut Butter Caramel Layer
In a tiny pot, mix together peanut butter, coconut oil, maple syrup, and vanilla. Heat things up on medium to low, stirring constantly until bubbles start to form. Then, pour this magical mixture over your cooled base and let it chill in the fridge for about an hour. Voilà!
Step 3. Top Chocolate Layer
Melt your chocolate in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until it’s smooth and runny. Then, pour that silky goodness over your peanut layer and tilt your dish to make sure the chocolate covers every inch. But hurry, because that chocolate can set faster than you can say “yum!” Pop it in the fridge for 20 more minutes or until it’s firm.
Can I Use Almond Meal Instead of Almond Flour?
Yes you can. Almond flour gives more of a shortbread taste and texture whereas almond meal (which is ground almonds with the skin on) has a more nutty taste. This recipe we used the almond meal and made it in the Thermomix by blitzing it up for around 6-10 seconds on speed 10.
