2 Ingredient Frozen Dog Treats with Banana and Pumpkin

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

The banana-pumpkin combo is more than just two ingredient dog treats.  Bananas bring potassium and natural sweetness. Pumpkin adds fiber and supports digestion and often given when dogs have loose bowel movments to help firm them up. Both are safe, vet-approved, and happen to freeze beautifully without separating or turning icy.

Got leftover cooked pumpkin? Then this makes this simple recipe even easier. Plus because it’s only a 2 ingredient treat they are made with common foods you’ll have at home.

Recipe Ingredients

Pumpkin – cooked mashed plain pumpkin or pure pumpkin puree.  Don’t use pumpkin pie filling from a tin. The added spices and additives added to it can be toxic to dogs.

Ripe Bananas (2 medium, about 1 cup mashed bananas). The riper, the better. You want bananas with brown spots because the starches have converted to sugar, making them sweeter and creamier when blended. Underripe bananas are starchy and don’t puree as smoothly. They also freeze harder, which makes the treats less enjoyable for your dog. Unripe bananas are

Ingredient Notes

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO USE PUMPKIN YOU’VE COOKED YOURSELF.  Lots of added ingredients are placed into a can of pumpkin pie filling which can be quite toxic for dogs.  Artificial sweeteners like xylitol (which is fatal to dogs).

Spices like nutmeg or cloves that are usually added to make pumpkin filling tasty can be harmful for dogs.

Use overripe bananas. The more brown spots, the better. Pro bakers know this for banana bread, and it applies here too. The extra sweetness and creaminess make a massive difference in texture and flavor. Unripe bananas can be harder to digest and cause an upset stomach.

The 2:1 ratio of banana to pumpkin is key. Too much pumpkin and the treats get watery and bland. Too much banana and they freeze too hard. This balance gives you treats that are firm enough to hold their shape but soft enough that a dog’s tongue can work through them without frustration.

Recipe Tips

Silicone molds or an ice cube tray. Silicone is ideal because the treats pop out clean without cracking. Ice cube trays work in a pinch, but you might need to run warm water on the bottom to release them. Bone-shaped molds, paw print trays, or even mini muffin tins all do the job. Small molds  like paw prints work really well especially for small dogs. If you only have large molds cut the pumpkin dog treats into smaller sizes for them and before storing in the freezer.

To make moving the silicone dog bone molds easier I place it on a baking sheet so they don’t wobble when transfering them to the freezer.

Storage

These treats freeze beautifully and last up to 3 months in an airtight container or freezer bag. Layer them with parchment paper if you’re stacking them to prevent them from sticking together. Remove them from silicone ice cube trays when storing in the freezer.  We like to pop them into clear zip lock bags so they are easy to find in the freezer for the occasional snack.

Additions and Substitutions

Use plain Greek yogurt instead of pumpkin if your dog tolerates dairy well. The probiotic boost is great for gut health, and the tangy flavor contrasts nicely with the banana. Use the same 1/2 cup measurement.

Stir in a handful of blueberries before freezing for antioxidant-packed bursts. Mash them slightly so they distribute evenly and don’t sink to the bottom. Most dogs can eat blueberries but this article Can Dogs Eat Blueberries is full of great information to be sure.
